Pops of Orange

Wednesday, May 15, 2013

This week I'm loving pops of orange in neutral interiors. I've been scouring Pinterest for some new interior inspiration, and I keep coming back to these tiny pops of orange that make a space more interesting without doing anything very complicated. Orange isn't necessarily my favorite color (or really a color I would ever choose for anything really...), but for this I think it actually works. Here are my picks (below) for surprising, yet satisfying pops of orange. Cheers!

Concrete Details

Monday, April 22, 2013

Lately I'm loving concrete/cement details in interiors, especially when paired with warm colors, wood, or plants since they give the  otherwise cold, industrial look a warm, inviting touch. Sitting on a chair made out of concrete might not be the most comfortable thing in the world, but it certainly creates the industrial-chic look that I absolutely love. Concrete can be used pretty much anywhere if done correctly: walls, floors, furniture, accents, you name it. I'm thinking a concrete table (hello outdoor friendly) might be the perfect addition to my backyard for the summer.

Santorini Dream Home

Tuesday, March 19, 2013

It's funny how sometimes deja vu can strike in the oddest of places. Earlier this week I was browsing Elle Decor and drooling over this absolute dream home in Santorini - a light, white, minimalist abode with accents of pink and purple and a killer view of the ocean. Doing some shopping online today, I came across this Vionnet dress that brought me immediately back to the Santorini house - light and airy in shades of pink, purple, and blue. Made me want to buy the dress, grab my husband, and jump on the next plane out to Santorini!

Timeline Reclaimed Wood Alternative

Tuesday, March 12, 2013

Anyone who knows me knows that I love reclaimed wood. Floors, walls, furniture, you name it, it probably looks better in reclaimed wood. The problem with reclaimed wood is and always will be that it's, well, used. Problems with limited quantity (running out of wood halfway through building a floor? Not the most fun), lead paint, matching colors, split boards, the list goes on. The end product may be beautiful, but it sure can be a pain in the ass to work with.

Timeline, a new alternative to reclaimed wood based in LA, seems to have answered every rustic designer's dream. They give you the look of reclaimed wood, but it's all new, and you have 11 colors/styles to choose from. And surprise! If you run out, no big deal. Just order more. Pretty much sounds like a dream come true to me. Check out their website, www.timelinewood.com, to see more beautiful photos of what they can do. Very cool.

Woodgrain Home Accessories

Wednesday, March 06, 2013

Woodgrain home accessories seem to be popping up everywhere this season. I'm a bit on the fence on this trend - if done correctly, a touch of woodgrain here and there could add a nice rustic touch to your space, especially if you're decorating with a small budget. Be careful of "cheesy" woodgrain through - the kind that doesn't actually look like wood, but like a crappy, cartoony imitation of wood that you wouldn't want to touch with a 10 foot pole. To avoid cheesy looking woodgrain, make sure to go for a fine, asymmetrical grain, with plenty of texture. The right woodgrain print can go anywhere... pillows, rugs, plates, and even wallpaper. I'm not sure if I'll rush out immediately to buy some woodgrain pieces for my house, but the idea makes me a bit curious. What do y'all think about woodgrain accessories? Love it, or leave it?

Modern Living in a Portuguese Fisherman's Hut

Tuesday, February 05, 2013

Flipping through Elle Decor I discovered the most heavenly looking scene and was immediately hit with the travel bug. This traditional fisherman's hut in Lisbon was recently renovated for modern living, but what's left of the original rustic quality of the interior is absolutely gorgeous. As if the aesthetic quality of this ruggedly-refined hut isn't enough, the sand florin the main interior is also heated by a radiant-heat system. I think I'll kick back with a glass of Portuguese vinho verde and stay a while...

Aztec & Geometric Print Rugs

Tuesday, January 29, 2013

I'm having a moment with aztec and geometric printed rugs. They do so much to give boldness and dimension to a space without being overly bright, which can be a little overwhelming. The bold prints give such a rich illusion of texture that I just can't get enough of. Here are a few of my picks for spaces that do printed rugs right!

Beautiful Bunk Beds

Monday, October 22, 2012

I think my kids would probably murder me if I tried to make them sleep in bunk beds, but there are some great space saving bedroom designs out there for anyone who has too many people and not quite enough space. My son goes to college next year, and that kid is in for a "my-bedroom-is-the-size-of-a-closet" rude awakening (as are most freshman moving away from home for the first time, I'm sure...). Bunking or lofting your bed and using the space underneath is a fantastic space-saving technique that can absolutely be used outside the dorm, and it doesn't have to be cramped, ugly, or embarrassing. Here are a few of my favorite picks: if you've got a small space, don't be afraid to get your loft on!

The amazing Zara, known for its European styling and cheap prices, opened up a home line this week. Finally - someone can compete with the cheap interior design mecca that is IKEA. Wooden Sinks

Tuesday, October 09, 2012

Recently I've been having a secret love affair with wooden sinks. They're the perfect way to easily add a bit of nature to your bathroom, and since they're sort of unusual, your guests will definitely take note of how amazing it looks. Wood is pretty common to use in a rustic or modern bathroom, but when is the last time you can remember the sink itself actually being made of wood? For me, it's definitely been a while. Round, rectangle, petrified, rough, smooth, flat, deep - really any shape works well with wooden sinks. Pair them with stone, porcelain, brick, or metal for a clean, chic look that anyone can appreciate.
