No Talk of Politics
Wednesday, September 26, 2012
As I get older, I've started to realize that the ONE THING you CANNOT talk about in a crowd is POLITICS. I used to think it was religion, sex, money, and other sordid affairs - but clearly I was misguided. As the election gets closer, I'm afraid to make eye contact with anyone who might ask me for my opinion on the candidates. I would rather drop an F-bomb during a baptism than have to defend my beliefs over cocktails.
It's shocking how incredibly divided everyone is. As far back as my political memory serves me, it seems that no matter who has been in office, we as a nation have been perpetually pissed off about SOMETHING. Health care, social security, war, taxes, abortion, gay rights... I think the fighting has become more exciting than the thought of resolution. Honestly, I'm not even sure of the where, what, when, and how of all our current problems, though I'm pretty sure plenty of you can remind me.
You can imagine how I light up the room when it comes to talking politics (and by "light up the room" I'm talking more like exploding fire and flames rather than illumination). Living straddled between two of the most opposed and opinionated red state/ blue state divides hasn't been a walk in the park. When I'm in Texas, I'm that damn Hollywood hussy whoring herself for Obama, and when I'm in Los Angeles, I'm considered guilty of running around with crazy-eyed republicans who think Sarah Palin would have nursed us all back to health.
It's really hard for me to keep my mouth shut on most subjects, but not this one. I'd rather wrestle with an alligator than have to try and stand my ground in the quicksands of a political debate. I think I'm not alone on this one, either. It feels like we have all done a great job making our democratic process a real clusterfuck. The only success I think we can agree on is that we have successfully joined together as a nation to create a government that makes sure nobody really wins in the end. So here's to Life, Liberty, and The Pursuit of Happiness.
