Fall Fashion: Spend or Save?
Thursday, August 09, 2012

When the fall clothes come out, I get the shopping bug. I love fall in LA because I can wear a wool jacket with open toed sandals and I'm not too hot or too cold, and no one gives me weird looks. The big question when I'm ready to jump on the new things I've been lusting after is always what to spend on, and what to save on. Sometimes the crazy ass department store prices are completely worth it for the quality, but other times I leave thinking that maybe I should be building schools in Africa with the money I just dropped on a pair of heels (you know the ones that make you feel like you can conquer the world and kick ass Xena-warrior princess style? Yeah, those ones).

This season I'm feeling like there's no reason I can't wear a beautiful wool coat, jeans, and heels in neutrals just about every day. After a little researching what the fashion world's got going on at the moment, I got a damn near electric shock when I put together the price on an entire ideal outfit. The outfit on the left (while still pretty spendy) costs $916. Think that's a lot? The outfit on the right costs a ridiculous, outrageous $4,184. And no, that's not a typo. So you're telling me I can have either 1. The outfit on the right, or 2. The outfit on the left, AND you'll throw in a leather couch, case of wine, and a giant flatscreen TV? Wow fashion is whacked... (not that I don't occasionally offend and overspend when I should be doing plenty of other, more productive things...)
Save (outfit on left): Banana Republic Liv Sunglasses ($88), Gap Vintage Western Shirt ($54.95), Mango Decorative Ripped Jean ($69.99), Harvey Nichols Paul Smith Wool & Cashmere Blend Coat ($460), Max Studio Elettra Sandal ($159.95), BCBGeneration Tess Foldover Clutch ($82.99)
Spend (outfit on right): Tom Ford Campbell Sunglasses ($360), J.Crew Denim Western Shirt ($118), J Brand 118 Mid-Rise Skinny Jean ($396), Jil Sander Navy Hidden Button Coat ($2,030), Jimmy Choo Margy Sandal ($895), See By Chloe Anna Clutch ($385)
