Yesterday I had two friends call with only 30 minutes warning that they were stopping by. Like a pro I poured myself a glass of champs and threw this easy tray together. If you always keep a bottle of bubbly in the fridge and some cheese, crackers and tidbit nibbles on hand, you can blow your impromptu guest's skirt up over their ears. It looks like I planned and plotted this - no one has to know it's just what I happened to have laying around. I usually use the same two wooden trays from Target I've had forever, and my trusted cheese knives give the whole setup an extra element of "fancy". Grab a tray, unwrap the snacks, stick a knife in the cheese, pop the bubbly - I've got this move down pat. For a little extra spice, I clipped a spring of rosemary and picked a few kumquats that grow year round in my yard and stuck them on the tray, and voila. Makes me look like I really broke a sweat. Throw on a little Etta James as they're pulling into the driveway, and when they leave they'll definitely be talking envious shit about you as they walk out the door, but don't worry. They'll be back.
